AWOL soldier shot dead by 'Reds'

DUMAGUETE CITY – A member of the Philippine Army who had gone AWOL (Absent Without Leave) was shot dead by alleged members of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) early Wednesday in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental.

The police identified the victim as Andy S. Castor, 41, married, and a resident of Mabini Street, Poblacion, Guihulngan City, a report from the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO) said.

Early police investigation showed that the victim was riding his motorcycle at around 7:35 a.m. to bring his wife to work, Aloha, a teacher at Barangay Nagsaha, Guihulngan City, when five unidentified men believed to be NPA members shot him.

The victim was brought to the Guihulngan District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police investigators recovered from the crime scene eight pieces of fired cartridge cases of caliber 9-mm pistol and seven pieces of fired cartridges of caliber .45 pistol and two slugs.

Investigators are still probing the motive for the killing. (PNA)
