KIDAPAWAN CITY — A special task group has been created to investigate the killing of radioman Eduardo “Ed” Dizon, a police official said Friday.
Lt. Col. Maria Joyce Birrey, city police director, said Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) Dizon aims to speed up the probe on the radioman's murder Wednesday evening by still unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen.
“We are currently reviewing the CCTV footages that captured the crime,” Birrey told Radio Station DXND here.
Dizon, a resident of Tejada Subdivision here, was driving his Mitsubishi sedan on his way home at past 10 p.m. when two men onboard a motorbike opened fire on him.
A former municipal councilor of neighboring Makilala town in North Cotabato, Dizon was unarmed during the attack, police said.
Police investigators found at least seven empty shells for 9mm pistol near the vehicle of the victim, who succumbed to five bullet wounds.
Dizon, former station manager of Brigada News FM Kidapawan, hosted “Tira Brigada”, a public affairs and commentary program.
He resigned last year after he filed his candidacy for Makilala town councilor and his wife, Madonna, was named station manager.
Dizon, however, failed to regain a seat in the town’s Sangguniang Bayan in his latest bid.
Prior to his political career, Dizon worked with the Notre Dame Broadcasting Corporation (NDBC) as a disc jockey for DXOL-FM for several years.
He later moved to Kidapawan where he hosted a public affairs program of DXND Radyo Bida and musical program over DXDM-FM.
In a statement, the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP) condemned Dizon's killing, describing it as an attack on press freedom. The NUJP Kidapawan chapter, for its part, is seeking speedy justice for the death of Dizon. (PNA)
