MANILA—Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic personnel can have safer enforcement of their duties following the donation of 108 high-visibility reflective vests by a private sponsor on Friday.
Edison “Bong” Nebrija, MMDA Edsa Special Traffic and Transport Zone (ESTTZ) head, said they appreciate the donations from private organizations and individuals, who see and happy with the work of the MMDA.
“Hindi lang naman si sir Alvin Carranza, marami ring mga taong, they signify their intentions to help us out. Sa susunod naman may iba na naman gamit na ibibigay sa amin from a different group naman, so, pampa-high morale talaga ito sa mga enforcers natin (It’s not just Alvin Carranza, there are many people who have signified their intentions to help us out. Next would be other equipment that would also be given to us by a different group. This really helps with keeping the morale of our enforcers high),” Nebrija said in an ambush interview at the MMDA office in Makati City.
The 108 new vests have been divided between two groups -- 88 for the Task Force for Special Operations and 20 for the ESTTZ under Nebrija.
The Edsa traffic chief stressed how much the vests would help in performing their duties, especially during low-light conditions during heavy rains or at night.
“Very important, lalong-lalo na at nasa kalsada kami. Yung low-visibility condition gaya ng umuulan, like yung gabi o pa-umaga. Yung vest makikita ninyo, full of reflectors, it helps us to be visible para maiwasan yung aksidente sa kalsada (These are very important, especially because we work in the streets. Low visibility conditions during rains, night time or dawn. As you can see, the vest is full of reflectors, it helps us to be visible so we can avoid accidents in the streets),” Nebrija said.
Enforcers who will receive the new vests will turn over their old ones to be used by other MMDA personnel.
He said the new vests were worth about PHP700 each and have patches and reflectors sewn onto the high-quality vest itself.
“Medyo may kamahalan. Meron naman mga mumurahin pero it will not last long. So, this one, mabasa, maarawan (It’s a little expensive. There are cheaper vests but those won’t last long. So this one, whether it gets wet or used under the sun), it will last longer than the ordinary ones,” Nebrija said.
In a ceremony, MMDA chairman Danilo Lim received on Thursday the donation from Carranza, CEO of advertising firm MacGraphics Carranz, Inc., during a formal handover at the MMDA office.
The MMDA chief thanked Carranza, asked his personnel to make good use of what they received, and “take pride in wearing them.” (PNA)
