MANILA — Eloy Poligrates of Marinerong Pilipino broke the PBA D-League record for the most points in a single game by a player to lead his team to a 141-97 rout of IWalk Chargers in the Foundation Cup at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City on Monday night.

The Cebuano guard finished with 67 points to lead the Skippers, shattering the previous record of 58 set by James Martinez on Aug. 2, 2016 for the AMA Titans in a 125-76 rout of the Topstar ZC Mindanao Aguilas.

Just like the AMA-Mindanao game, though, the Marinero-IWalk match was already decided early on as Marinero raced to a 31-20 lead after the first quarter, which eventually ballooned to as high as 47, 122-75, with 4:19 left in the fourth.

However, Coach Yong Garcia opted to keep Poligrates in the game despite the impending blowout when he saw that he can break Martinez's record.

"Nakita namin yung score ni Poli, sabi namin kayang abutan yung record ni James. Binigyan namin siya ng chance na habulin at sobrang ganda ng laro niya. Sobrang ganda ng gising ni Poli (We saw Poli’s score and we knew he can break James’ record. We gave him a chance to break it, he played well),” Garcia said.

JR Alabanza and Rev Diputado each scored 11 markers to backstop Poligrates as the Skippers assured themselves of a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals after moving up to 5-0 in Group A play.

Wowie Escosio tallied 23 markers and 10 boards for the Chargers, who fell to 2-3.

Meanwhile, BRT Sumisip-St. Clare also stayed unbeaten with a 112-100 win against McDavid-La Salle Araneta.

Joshua Fontanilla put up 24 points on 3-of-7 shooting from long range for the Saints, who are now 4-0 in Group B.

Henry Iloka's 32-point, 28-rebound, and six-block performance hardly mattered as the Stallions remained winless at 0-4.

In the main game, Martinez, who witnessed his record getting shattered, led Asia's Lashes' late charge to defeat Hazchem, 108-98.

Martinez finished with 22 points on 3-for-5 shooting from long range with two rebounds and five assists for the Soldiers, who moved up to 3-2.

Reymark Matias came up with 27 markers, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals for the Green Warriors, who slipped to their third straight loss after their conference-opening win.
