MANILA -- Baguio successfully defended its crown in the Batang Pinoy National Finals overall championship in Puerto Princesa City after snaring a total of 27 gold medals as of 3 p.m. of the final competition day on Friday.

Baguio, known as the mixed martial arts hotbed of the Philippines, scored 14 golds in wushu and 10 more in muay thai to spark the breakaway from Cebu City.

Baguio, which won the overall title last year at home, now has a running total of 48 golds, way more than Cebu City’s 27 golds.

Baguio also got 36 silvers and 51 bronzes, while Cebu City collected 22 silvers and 29 bronzes.

Despite missing out on the overall title, Cebu City still has something to cheer about as Aldrener Igot completed his quest to become the meet’s most bemedaled athlete.

Igot struck gold in the boys’ team event with Khalil Jasper Abella and Kien Zhyron Torreon, edging Renato Joaquin, Nino Gleam Sabile, and Allyson Quiepo of General Santos via shootout and in the mixed team event with Shane Dinopol, beating Dumaguete’s Nina Dominique Tagle and Matt Charrid Bajado, 6-2.

Igot will walk away with eight golds.

With the win, Dinopol also avenged her loss to Tagle in the cub girls' Olympic round finals on Thursday. (PNA)
