LINGAYEN, Pangasinan -- The rainfall brought by Tropical Storm Ineng and Tropical Depression Jenny all over Pangasinan last week benefited the farmlands in the province, according to the Provincial Agriculture Office.

“We need rain because of our main cropping season so the amount of rain brought by the weather disturbances is beneficial to our farmers (farmlands),” provincial agriculturist Dalisay Moya said in an interview Tuesday.

She said the main crop this season is palay (rice grain) which needs more water to grow.

“Rice fields need rain, especially areas that are rain-fed or are primarily reliant to rain for their irrigation, which are mostly in western Pangasinan, some at the eastern and central part of the province,” she added.

Pangasinan targets to plant rice in the 180,000 hectares of land all over the province for this cropping season until the end of September, while 90 percent of the land area has been planted already, Moya said.

“Year-round, we need rain but we need it most these months as the palays are already on their reproductive stage,” she noted.

Moya disclosed no damages were recorded in the agriculture and fishery sector due to Ineng and Jenny.

“Rain is beneficial to us, except when there will be flooding or it goes with strong winds that might affect our crops,” she added. (PNA)
