LEGAZPI CITY -- At least 23 convicts freed under the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) Law turned themselves in to different police stations in the Bicol region before the 15-day deadline imposed by President Rodrigo Duterte for their surrender lapsed on Thursday.

Maj. Malu Calubaquib, Police Regional Office (PRO) 5 (Bicol) spokesperson, said in an interview on Friday that those who voluntarily surrendered were from Sorsogon (6); Albay (4); Masbate (5); Camarines Norte (4); Camarines Sur (2); and Catanduanes (2).

She noted that one GCTA-freed convict in Sorsogon died of an illness before the 15-day period ended.

"The surrendered prisoners were convicted of rape, parricide, homicide, robbery, and murder, which fall under heinous crimes," Calubaquib said.

They were placed under the custody of the concerned police stations for proper turnover to the Bureau of Corrections, she added.

The PRO-5 urged the other convicts freed under the GCTA to surrender to the authorities and to cooperate in the government investigation on the reported anomalies committed in the implementation of the law. (PNA)
