COTABATO CITY -- A police intelligence officer was critically wounded in an ambush perpetrated by still-unidentified gunmen in Carmen, North Cotabato.

Lt. Col. Bernard Tayong, speaking for the North Cotabato police, identified the victim as Sgt. Abejay Dandan, of Barangay Kibudtungan, Carmen, and currently detailed with the Regional Intelligence Division of the Police Regional Office -12.

Tayong said the victim was on his way home on board his vehicle and was passing by Barangay Kitulaan in the same town around 6:30 p.m. when waylaid by armed men positioned on both sides of the road.

“Despite being hit, Dandan still managed to speed off from the site and went straight to the Carmen municipal hospital,” Tayong said.

From there, hospital staff members called on the local police office and informed them about the incident, he said. Responding cops immediately proceeded to the ambush site and recovered empty shells from an M16 rifle and .45-caliber pistol.

Tayong said the victim was later transferred to a hospital in Kidapawan City because of his serious condition.

Police investigators are still trying to determine if the ambush has something to do with the victim’s job as an intelligence officer. (PNA)
