MANILA -- Typhoon Onyok slightly intensified, and is now heading northwards over the sea east of Taiwan moving at 20 kph, the weather bureau said on Monday afternoon.
Onyok was last eyed at 320 kilometers north, northeast of Basco, Batanes. It has maximum sustained winds of 130 kph, and gustiness of up to 160 kph.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) maintains it does not expect Onyok to make landfall in any part of the country. The typhoon is forecast to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility either Monday night or early Tuesday.
Tropical cyclone wind signal no. 1 was raised over Batanes and Babuyan Islands. Sea travel is risky over these areas, as well as the northern and eastern seaboards of northern Luzon.
PAGASA said the rain bands of Onyok will continue to bring occasional light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains and gusty conditions over Batanes Monday night.
The typhoon will also bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Babuyan Group of Islands, Ilocos Norte, Apayao and Cagayan.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have isolated rain showers caused by localized thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, moderate to strong winds will blow over the eastern sections of central and southern Luzon, and the rest of northern Luzon. Coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.
Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate with light to moderate seas, PAGASA said. (PNA)
