Davao City to host Mindanao art fair exhibit, conference

DAVAO CITY -- Artists and gallery owners in Mindanao will converge in the city for a back-to-back event of the 1st Mindanao Art 2019 and Mindanao Art Talk that will run from October 4 to 6.

Top officials of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) will grace the opening, to be led by executive director Al Ryan Alejandre, together with Commissioner for Cultural Heritage, Fr. Harold Rentoria, National Committee on Museums head Amado Alvarez, and National Committee on Art Galleries head John Robillos.

Rey Mudjahud Kublai Milan, president and executive director of Lawig-Diwa, Inc., said the Mindanao Art 2019 has been given a grant by the NCCA National Committee on Arts Galleries (NCCA-NCAG).

"It is the first-ever regional art fair competitive grant that NCCA-NCAG offered during the application period last year," he said in a statement released Wednesday.

The art fair will be held at the Gaisano Mall of Davao while the art talk cum conference, at the Philippine Women's College.

Also expected to grace the opening activity on Friday are Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexei Nograles, Davao City Vice Mayor Sebastian Duterte, and Ateneo de Davao University President, Fr. Joel Tabora, SJ.

Milan said art personalities in the country will come to share their expertise during the Mindanao Art Talk.

Topics to be discussed include the artist developing an audience, artist curating self, and art selling self.

"This has been a longed-for activity, considering that Mindanao has not had anything like this ever. We want to stir up an art industry in the island for it to become sustainable and profitable," Milan said. (PNA)
