ILOILO CITY -- Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexei Nograles graced the inauguration of the PHP50 million newly rehabilitated cultural center of the West Visayas State University (WVSU) in La Paz district this city on Wednesday.

Nograles was responsible for the provision of the fund, when he was still chair of the appropriations committee of the 17th Congress, for the rehabilitation of the center that was originally constructed in 1978.

In a press conference following the inauguration, he said the cultural center was one of the venues visited by President Rodrigo Duterte when he was campaigning for President. “During that time, the center was very dilapidated,” he said.

After the elections, when he was in Congress representing the first district of Davao, Nograles was approached by WVSU President Luis Sorolla during one of his visits to the university and requested funding to rehabilitate the center.

He said that before the rehabilitation, there was already a threat for the center to be condemned.

“Today, we just inaugurated this newly-enhanced cultural center and I’m very happy with the results. At least, we assure the safety of our children and (it) can be used by students for their school activities and even outsiders,” he said.

He added that the rehabilitation of the cultural center was also their way of expressing gratitude to the WVSU for “being home of top-notchers”.

He said that a lot of WVSU graduates landed on the top spot when they took their board examinations, such as the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) and the Physician Licensure Examination.

It also serves as a legacy and tribute to Sorolla, who is on his last term as president of the university. The rehabilitated center has a seating capacity of 2,575.

Meanwhile, Nograles was conferred the title Doctor of Humanities, Honoris Causa in recognition of his support to the state university.

The conferment was witnessed by the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) chairperson, Dr. Julian Prospero de Vera III, and officials of WVSU. (PNA)
