5 killed, over 300 injured in latest Mindanao quake

MANILA – Five people are confirmed dead, two missing while 394 others were injured after a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Tulunan, North Cotabato on Tuesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday.

In its 6 a.m. update signed by Executive Director Ricardo Jalad, the agency said the casualties are all from the regions of Northern Mindanao, Davao Region and Soccsksargen.

The fatalities were identified as Nestor Narciso, 66, of Barangay Zone 1, Bagong Sikat, Koronadal City, South Cotabato, who died after being hit by falling debris; Angel and Boy Andy, 22, and seven years old. respectively, and residents of Sitio Kitao, Barangay Lanao Kuran, Arakan, Cotabato, who were killed due to a quake-induced rockslide; Michelle Moria, 23, of Sitio Alimodian, Barangay Banayal, Tulunan, North Cotabato, who succumbed after being hit by falling debris; and Jesriel Pabra, 16, of Purok Pakigdait, Magsaysay, Davao Del Sur, who died after being hit by a collapsed wall.

Tuesday's quake also damaged 133 infrastructures in Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region and Soccsksargen.

The NDRRMC also reported that 1,681 families or around 8,045 individuals were affected in three barangays in Soccsksargen.

Of this number, a total of 701 families or 3,505 persons are now taking temporary shelter at Barangay Ilomavis Evacuation Center while 980 families or 4,900 individuals are being aided outside. (PNA)
