LEGAZPI CITY --- The Department of Health's (DOH) vaccination campaign against polio in Bicol is in full swing, with over 27,000 children immunized during the past two quarters of this year.

In an interview Wednesday, Dr. Monrey Mancilla, DOH Immunization Program chief, said their immunization coverage has reached 27,193 or 40 percent of their target coverage of 67,984 children aged 0 to 5 years.

"So far, there are no reported polio victims in Bicol," he noted.

Mancilla, quoting a DOH central office report, said a third polio case in the country has been reported.

The report confirmed that a four-year-old child from Maguindanao province suffered acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) after failing to receive any dose of the oral polio vaccine.

Mancilla said no similar incident must happen in Bicol.

"I urge all parents, guardians to have their children undergo immunization to protect them against diseases," he said. (PNA)
