DUMAGUETE CITY -- The city government here, in cooperation with the city social welfare and development office (CSWDO) and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Bajumpandan, Dumaguete, has embarked on a project dubbed “Pangandoy sa Pasko”.

The project aims to help and bring Christmas cheer to sons and daughters of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), both in the male and female dormitories of the city district jail.

City Tourism Officer Jacqueline Veloso Antonio said Thursday that more than 200 children, aged 12 years and below, have been pre-identified and screened by the BJMP to receive their Christmas wishes from kind-hearted citizens here.

The children were asked to list down their wishes, such as clothes, toys, and shoes, and these will be distributed at the BJMP-managed city jail in Bajumpandan on December 9 and 16.

Antonio said it is heartening to note that these children wish to be reunited with their parents on or before Christmas and that some of them also wish to have food for Noche Buena with the rest of the family while their loved ones are in jail.

Interested members of the community, who wish to contribute and share their blessings with these children are urged to send their contributions on or before December 5, to give social workers ample time to sort out and prepare the gifts for distribution, she said.

They can also contact the CSWDO office and/or the City Tourism Office, she added.

Meanwhile, Christmas for the PDLs has been made extra special this year as the city placed an order of lanterns of different sizes from them.

Antonio said the city has ordered 650 pieces of “parol” so that the PDLs would have extra income this holiday season.

The Christmas tree lighting ceremony has been set on December 6 to coincide with the Christmas Choir Competition at the Quezon Park here.
Antonio said the competition is open to all choirs across the province. (PNA)
