DUMAGUETE CITY - Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo is calling on residents of this provincial capital of Negros Oriental to be “instruments of peace”.

He issued the statement as the city celebrated on Monday the 399th feast of the city’s patroness, St. Catherine of Alexandria, and its 71st charter day anniversary on Sunday.

“Our faith compels us to minister to the needy, advocate for justice and promote peace by bearing witness to the living gospel,” Remollo said in his message.

He said Dumaguete is home to a community of believers, under the tutelage of the Most Reverend Julito B. Cortes D.D., (bishop of Dumaguete) "who put emphasis on the use of the intellect and high moral sense of righteousness to the promotion of peace through constant and meaningful dialogue”.

“Amid some incidents of violence that assault our morals and cause us grief, we need to re-affirm our commitment to the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ to become instruments of peace and follow the example of our revered patroness, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, who converted many unbelievers through the strength of her wisdom and virtuous life,” he said.

Remollo was apparently alluding to the series of shooting incidents and crimes in the city and in the province, including that of veteran broadcast journalist Dindo Generoso who was gunned down last Nov. 7 by two motorcycle-riding assailants.

Generoso was handling a radio block time program over dyEM-FM Bai radio that was paid for by the city government at the time of his death.

Remollo underscored the need for the parish to celebrate the gift of faith "that inspires and behooves the believers to continue the dialogue for peace”.

This year’s fiesta theme is “St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish: Celebrating Peace in Dialogue.” (PNA)
