Classes in Bacolod, other LGUs canceled due to ‘Tisoy’

BACOLOD CITY -- Classes from pre-school to high school have been suspended on Monday in Bacolod City and other local government units in Negros Occidental affected by Typhoon "Tisoy" (Kammuri).

As of 8 a.m., Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 1 was still hoisted in 19 areas in the province, according to the Severe Weather Bulletin No. 9 released by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The affected areas are Bacolod City, Bago City, Cadiz City, Calatrava, Enrique B. Magalona, Escalante City, La Carlota City, Manapla, Murcia, Pulupandan, Sagay City, Salvador Benedicto, San Carlos City, San Enrique, Silay City, Talisay City, Toboso, Valladolid and Victorias City.

In Bacolod, Murcia, and Silay, only classes in pre-school level have been suspended while in Talisay and Cadiz, classes from kindergarten to high school have been canceled.

Also in Sagay, classes have been suspended from pre-school to elementary while in Toboso and Valladolid, there are no classes in all levels.

As of 6 a.m. on Monday, regional weather forecast showed that Eastern Visayas will have stormy weather, while the rest of Visayas, including Negros Occidental and Bacolod City, will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers/thunderstorms and gusty winds due to Typhoon Tisoy.

Strong winds from the northeast to northwest will prevail over the Visayas and Negros Island will have rough seas.

On Friday, Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has directed city and municipal disaster risk reduction and management councils (DRRMCs) in the province to initiate proactive readiness and place their respective operation centers on blue alert status in preparation for Typhoon Tisoy.

In Bacolod City, Mayor Evelio Leonardia also issued a memorandum on the same day directing the City DRRM Council, especially its implementing arm CDRRMO, all barangay officials, and allied agencies to go on blue alert, which means heightened 24/7 monitoring.(PNA)
