TACLOBAN CITY -- Several local government units in Eastern Visayas (Region 8) have extended the class suspension on Tuesday hours after Typhoon "Tisoy" (Kammuri) crossed the region.

In Tacloban City, Mayor Alfred Romualdez declared the suspension Monday night as a “precautionary measure” as the city continues to feel the effect of weather disturbance.

The executive order covers public and private schools in all levels in the region. Work in the government has resumed on Tuesday after it was suspended on Monday. Most of the regional offices of national government agencies are located in this city.

With Catbalogan City in Samar under tropical cyclone warning signal no. 3 on Monday afternoon, Mayor Dexter Uy was prompted to extend the cancellation of classes and work in the government up to Tuesday.

“As such, we have issued Executive Order No. D-067 extending the suspension of classes in all levels in both public and private schools as well as government work to December 03, 2019,” Uy said in his social media post.

In Calbayog City, one of the areas that bore the brunt of the typhoon, acting Mayor Diego Rivera extended the suspension of classes and work in government on Tuesday as recommended by the city disaster risk reduction management council.

Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla also extended the suspension of classes for elementary and high school in the entire province. The town of Palo, Leyte also issued a similar declaration.

Other local governments that declared suspension of classes in all levels are Ormoc City, Baybay City, Tanauan, Abuyog, Alangalang, and Kananga in Leyte province; Borongan City and Guiuan in Eastern Samar; Biliran, Naval, Cabucgayan, Culaba, Maripipi, and Caibiran in Biliran province; and the entire Northern Samar province.

As of noon, Leyte and Samar provinces are still under tropical cyclone warning signal no. 1.

Under Executive Order No. 66 issued in 2015, local disaster risk reduction and management council headed by governors and mayors are encouraged to use scientific data to decide whether it is safe to send students to school and government employees to work. (PNA)
