GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- Two national athletes from this city who garnered silver medals in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Manila are set to receive cash incentives from the city government.

Lady Manalo, head of the city sports division, said Tuesday Pencak Silat silver medalists Alfau Jan and Almohaidib Abad are entitled to get cash grants of PHP20,000 each in recognition of their achievements.

Manalo said the incentive, which has been approved by city officials, was based on the provisions of City Ordinance No. 21, series of 2004.

“Athletes who get medals or similar recognition in any sports event are entitled to receive cash incentives,” she said in an interview.

Manalo said the local government's incentives for successful athletes aim to recognize hard work while encouraging others to train harder and improve their performance.

Manalo said the cash grant will be on top of the incentives that will be received by the two athletes from the Philippine Sports Commission.

She said they will also consult the city mayor’s office for the possible granting of incentives to three other athletes from the city who competed in the SEA Games-- national team members Mark Gil Alfafara in volleyball, John Albert Mantua in athletics, and Carl Joshua Tangonan in aero gymnastics.

Manalo said they are pushing for the amendment of Ordinance No. 21 to allow athletes who competed in international events but failed to get medals to also receive cash incentives. (PNA)
