DAGUPAN CITY -- Mayor Marc Brian Lim has declared work suspension in all government offices in the city on Dec. 23 in celebration of the Victorio Edades Day.

In the Executive Order No. 53 issued on Friday, Lim said it is fitting to pay homage to Edades who has done great service to his country through arts.

Edades, awarded National Artist in Painting in 1979, was born on Dec. 23, 1896 to Hilario and Celia Edades in Barangay Bolosan here.

“He gravitated towards the modernist movement that went beyond the idealist exteriors of Impressionism and Realism. During the time of Amorsolo, when paintings had similar themes, Edades bravely mounted on one-man show on modern art at the Philippine Columbia Club in Ermita, Manila.

Despite the shock, he caused in the arts circle by his introduction of different style, he remained with his artistic creativity,” Lim said in his executive order.

Before his death on March 7, 1985, Edades won various awards such as the Pro Patria award in 1961 and Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award in 1964, he said.

Among his famous works are The Sketch (1928), The Builders (1928), Interaction with Carlos Francisco and Galo Ocampo (1935), and Kasaysayan (1979).

Ordinance No. 2082-2017 declaring every 23rd of December as Victorio Edades Day was promulgated in 2017. (PNA)
