ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Several outbound passengers were stranded Wednesday after the two major airlines canceled its evening flights caused by malfunctioning runway lights at the Zamboanga City International Airport.
Ma. Socorro Reyes, Civil Aviation of the Philippines (CAAP)-Zamboanga administrative officer, said the stranded passengers were rebooked to fly out the next day because of the snag.
The CAAP-Zamboanga management, in its public advisory Wednesday, said that the runway lights were "inoperational due to open circuit.”
“Please be advised that schedule of flights at Zamboanga International Airport from January 8 to January 10, 2020 shall be limited from sunrise to sunset,” the advisory said.
“To all affected passengers, kindly coordinate with the airline concerned for further details regarding your flight. Apologies for the inconvenience,” it added.
Reyes told the Philippine News Agency on Thursday that CAAP technicians headed by Engr. Eddie Tadea were checking the underground cables along Runway 09 near Barangay San Roque, particularly at the airport’s circumferential road.
“They are checking one by one all the underground cables. If they are successful, normal flights will resume again. Actually it was only last Wednesday where we canceled the last flights,” Reyes said.
She said that as of Thursday, both the Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific Air have moved their last flight schedules to 5 p.m. (PNA)
