BINMALEY, Pangasinan — Quarantine checkpoints have been put in place after African Swine Fever (ASF) tests on some 34 hogs from a backyard piggery in Barangay Linoc here on Wednesday came out with positive results.
In an interview Friday, acting provincial veterinarian Jovito Tabarejos said the hogs died while blood sampling was being done by the Department of Agriculture (DA)-Ilocos regional office.
The Dagupan City government has placed six quarantine checkpoints in the entry and exit points of the locality including near the river system, city veterinarian Dr. Michael Maramba said in a separate interview also on Friday.
He said two of the island barangays of the city are within the seven-kilometer radius from Barangay Linoc.
“As per protocol, there will be no entry and exit of pigs from Barangays Carael and Calmay,” he said.
He added that an estimated 100 backyard hog raisers are from the two villages, but these are supplying only around one percent of the total supply in the city.
“No culling yet as blood collection from the hogs here has just finished,” Maramba said.
He added that hog trading is not yet affected and 100 heads were still sold in the city’s market as of Friday.
Swine from Mapandan and Bayambang towns tested positive of ASF last year, but DA said the virus was already contained in these areas. (PNA)
