ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The local business community is now feeling the brunt of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) scare.

City Tourism Officer Sarita Sebastian said Friday that several business conferences, assemblies and other gatherings in local hotels have been canceled as a result of the outbreak of Covid-19.

“Hotels are complaining that some gatherings and conferences already booked by visitors of the city have been canceled due to worries posed by the Covid-19,” Sebastian said.

Sebastian said it is not only visitors of this city who have canceled their gatherings here but also several schools, which were supposed to hold their junior and senior proms.

She said that the Covid-19 scare has not only affected the business community but other sectors as well.

She hopes that the government agencies would be able to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 “because an outbreak of great proportions may cause disruptions in the economy” just like in Wuhan, Hubei province, China, the epicenter of the dreaded disease.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that there are 46,997 confirmed cases of Covid-19 globally as of February 13, 2020. Of the total, the WHO said that 46,550 confirmed cases of Covid-19 are recorded in China with 1,368 deaths. (PNA)
