BUTUAN CITY – The city government of Surigao on Friday held its annual “Kasalan sa Valentine’s Day” with a total of 70 couples tying knots in the solemnity of marriage.

The ceremony was presided by Mayor Ernesto U. Matugas, Jr. who said the “Kasalan sa Valentine’s Day” has become an "institutionalized program of the city government".

“This program aims to promote responsible parenthood and strengthen family ties,” Matugas said, adding that the program is a way of providing help to unwed couples to make their cohabitation legal.

“Legitimizing marriage means a lot of difference, especially to the children. It will give them confidence and feeling of security,” he added.

Before solemnizing their marriage, the mayor urged the couples to honor their commitment despite the difficulties that they may encounter in the future.

“Marriage is a sacred process. The couple must have trust and understanding with each other,” he said.

One of those who stood as the godfather of one of the couples was Marvin Tapoyong, who was asked to share his experiences in his 20-year married life.

Tapoyong said marriage "is like building a house that must have a good foundation. For the marriage to endure, the husband and wife must have an understanding with each other, caring and love".

In a phone interview on Friday, Surigao City information officer Annette Villaces said a couple who are both 18-years-old were the youngest during the program.

The oldest couple was a 64-year old groom and his 63-year old bride, Villaces said.

“The wedding was free of charge, with each couple having a wedding gift from the city government,” she said. (PNA)
