ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The local government here is set to buy PHP25- million worth of personnel protective equipment (PPE) intended for the emergency responders.

Dr. Elmeir Jade Apolinario, Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) chief, said Tuesday an emergency bidding will be held to fast-track the purchase of the PPEs, which has the concurrence of the City Council.

Among the PPEs that will be bought are information, education, communication materials, disposable coveralls, N95 masks, goggles, aprons, gloves, front entry-level C infectious disease suits, fully encapsulated level A suits, thermal guns and scanners, electrostatic sprayers, hospital field emergency tents with ventilation and lightning, and infectious disease transport vehicles.

“We do this (purchase) to address future threats that the city might face,” Apolinario said, adding the equipment have uses beyond the preventive measure to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease-2019 (Covid-19).

Apolinario said the city government has allocated some PHP220 million for disaster mitigation, preparation, response, recovery, and rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, the City Health Office said the over two dozen persons earlier placed as persons under monitoring (PUM) for Covid-19 have already been cleared of the disease.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Covid-19 as public health emergency of international concern. (PNA)
