ZAMBOANGA CITY – The city government is distributing vegetable seeds to encourage residents to grow vegetables as a source of food amid the enhanced community quarantine due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) crisis.

City Agriculturist Carmencita Sanchez said the city government has allotted PHP5 million for the program and so far, 1,000 families have received vegetable seeds.

Sanchez said each family was given two packs each of pechay, mustasa, swamp cabbage, locally known as kangkong, seeds.

"These kinds of vegetables can be easily grown and can be harvested in a month's time and they will have a source of fresh vegetables,” she said. "Backyard gardening will help ease their boredom during the quarantine period since they have something to attend to.”

Sanchez said residents who want to avail of free seeds could visit the city agriculture district offices in barangays Ayala, Tumaga, Culianan, Manicahan, Curuan, and Vitali.

She said the next venues of the mobile market are the barangays of Tumaga and Sinunuc, where there are two confirmed cases of Covid-19.

The “market on wheels”, meanwhile, will be in Barangay Calarian on Friday. (PNA)
