MANILA – Over four million learners and teachers are using Department of Education's online learning platform called Commons at the height of the enhanced community quarantine amid the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

"Tinitingnan namin ang alternative delivery modes gaya ng learning activities sa kanilang tahanan...patuloy pa rin ang edukasyon sa anumang paraan. 'Di natin pababayaan ang ating mga guro at mag-aaral (We're looking into alternative delivery modes like learning activities in their homes... education must continue in any way. We won't neglect our teachers and learners)," DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said during the Laging Handa public briefing on Tuesday.

Going to school to attend classes have been suspended in March when the community quarantine took effect. Since then, classes are done online through the platform.

Based on the DepEd's latest data, about 4,236,667 users have accessed the portal and the number of users is projected to rise in the coming days.

Users of Commons can now access the online platform without incurring data charges on their smartphones or tablets if they are Globe or TM subscribers.

“In this time of crisis, it is important that we make it possible to overcome this challenge with solid partnerships with the private sector. We are thankful for our partners’ generosity in support of the continuity of public education by providing us free data for DepEd Commons access amid the Covid-19 situation,” Briones said.

The portal contains online review materials and open educational resources created by the public school teachers.

It also integrates the Globe eLibrary, an online platform which features age-appropriate and engaging e-books ranging from storybooks for children and young adults to textbooks on core subjects such as Math, Science, English, Filipino, Music, and Arts. (PNA)
