MANILA – The Philippines made its presence felt in women's chess by beating Sweden, 205-65, in their historic friendly online chess match at Lichess last weekend.

The Filipinas, bannered by sisters Jerlyn Mae and Marie Antoinette San Diego, dominated the Swedes in their unique two-hour, 20-board showdown by taking the first five spots and eight of the top 10 places based on cumulative scores.

Woman FIDE Master (WFM) Jerlyn Mae San Diego emerged as the Filipinas' top scorer by winning all her seven matches and finishing with 24 points.

The 15-year-old student of First Uniting Christian School had a performance rating 2037 on 100 percent win rate.

Her older sister, Woman International Master (WIM) Marie Antoinette San Diego, finished a strong second with 22 points. The De la Salle University student had 1970 performance and 86 percent win rating.

WFM Allaney Jia Doroy came in third with 21 points on 1962 performance and 6 percent win rating.

Completing the top five scorers were Woman National Master (WNM) Francois Marie Magpily and WIM Kylen Joy Mordido with 14 points.

Overall, three players of Dasmariñas, Cavite -- the San Diego sisters and Mordido -- delivered for the Filipinas.

The top performer for Sweden was WIM Inna Agrest, who came in sixth with 12 points.

Agrest is the 29-year-old daughter of Soviet-born grandmaster and four-time Swedish champion Evgeny Agrest and WIM Svetlana Agrest.

She is currently ranked No. 2 female player in Sweden with ELO of 2284 behind only GM Pia Cramling.

Also making it to the Top 10 were Mary Joy Tan (12 points), WIM Vic Glysen Derotas (12 points) and WGM Janelle Mae Frayna (12 points) and Margo Zaritovskaya of Sweden (9 points).

Five-time Philippine women's champion and Sweden-based WIM Cristine Rose Mariano-Wagman and WFM Cherry Ann Mejia both finished with six points.

Fil-Swede player Jonah Carrio-Andersson also did well in her international debut for the Swedish team.

Except for Cramling, Sweden fielded most of its top players, including 65-year-old Eva Johansson and 13-year-old Alva Ling Tran.

WFM Susanna Berg, who conceptualized the friendly match with Mariano-Wagman, thanked all the participants.

"On behalf of the Swedish team, I would like to congratulate the United Queens Chess Club for an impressive victory in our match last Sunday," said Berg, considered as the "Ambassadress" of women's chess in Sweden. (PR)
