BALANGA CITY, Bataan – The number of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in this province has risen to 119, with six deaths.

“There is no ‘flattening of the curve’ yet in Bataan,” said Governor Albert Garcia on Thursday, adding this is the reason they are requesting for the extension of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

Garcia and the League of Municipalities of Bataan, headed by his sister, Dinalupihan Mayor Maria Angela Garcia, have recommended mass Covid-19 testing prior to the lifting of ECQ.

The governor, chair of the provincial Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF), has asked Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año, IATF national chair, to extend the ECQ in the province until May 31.

President Rodrigo Duterte, upon IATF’s recommendation, has placed Bataan under the general community quarantine status effective May 16.

Garcia said the report of the Provincial Health Office (PHO) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday showed that one died and seven others were tested positive of coronavirus, increasing the number of deaths from five to six and confirmed cases from 111 to 119.

The new confirmed cases are a 26-year-old man from Pilar; a 28-year-old man from Orani; a 34-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man from Balanga City; a 30-year-old and 50-year-old women, and a 39-year-old man from Limay; and a 53-year-old man from Balanga City who died.

The 34-year-old and the 33-year-old from this city are nurses at the Bataan General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) while the 30-year-old from Limay is an employee of the same hospital that was designated as an exclusive facility for Covid-19 patients.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old woman from this city recovered, increasing the number of recoveries to 43.

Out of 2,245 people tested for Covid-19, there were 1,609, including the 26 on Wednesday, found negative of the virus, 119 were positive, while 517 are still waiting for results. (PNA)
