TACLOBAN CITY – The An Waray Party-list has turned over 2,000 roofing materials to help families in Northern Samar and Eastern Samar rebuild their houses destroyed by Typhoon “Ambo” (Vongfong).

An Waray Party-list Rep. Florencio Noel led the turn-over Tuesday of 2,000 galvanized iron sheets to local officials of two provinces ravaged by the first typhoon that recently hit the country this year.

“Even in these times of cumulative grief, we will find a way to help one another. We provided out brothers and sisters the means to empower themselves – a temporary roof for their families and food items, so life can continue to be as normal as possible,” Noel said in an interview on Wednesday.

The party-list group also distributed Covid-19 assistance kits with face masks, hand sanitizers, face shields, and dressed chicken to typhoon-hit towns in Eastern Samar and Northern Samar provinces.

The kits are primarily intended for front-liners assigned in checkpoints, health facilities, and isolation facilities.

The Northern Samar provincial disaster risk reduction and management office initially reported that at least 2,557 houses were totally damaged in 14 towns of the province while 11,576 were partially damaged.

In Eastern Samar, at least 7,952 houses were destroyed by fierce winds, flooding, and big waves.

The towns of Lapinig, Las Navas, and Catubig are among the hard-hit areas of the typhoon in Northern Samar province, according to the provincial government.

Several towns in the province waived their relief goods allocation in favor of Lapinig town. These towns are Catarman, Allen, Laoang, Mondragon, Palapag, Pambujan, and San Roque.

On Tuesday, the Eastern Samar provincial government has placed nine towns in the province under a state of calamity due to destructions caused by the typhoon. These towns are Sulat, Taft, Can-avid, Dolores, Maslog, Oras, San Policarpo, Arteche, and Jipapad where flash floods destroyed houses and livelihoods of thousands of residents.

On May 14, the typhoon brought violent winds and heavy to intense rains over the northern portion of Samar and the southern portion of Northern Samar, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration. (PNA)
