LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – The Provincial Health Office (PHO) recorded 935 dengue cases from January 1 to May 18 this year with nine mortalities.

“Although the total number of cases is lower than the 1,133 recorded last year in the same period, the number of deaths is higher than last year with only two,” PHO chief, Dr. Anna Ma. Teresa de Guzman said in a radio interview on Thursday.

She said the mortalities may be attributed to the community quarantine when the mobility of people is limited and access to transportation is restricted.

“The people cannot easily go to the hospitals but now there are already public transportations although limited. So if they have symptoms, they should immediately go to the hospitals,” she added.

De Guzman said Pangasinan now has a limited supply of blood bags in different blood banks in the province as there are few donors, while organizing bloodletting activities is a challenge in this time of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic when mass gatherings are not allowed.

"Before, we were able to conduct at least three blood donation caravans in one week but now it is difficult because of the quarantine," she said.

De Guzman reiterated the need to keep the surroundings clean to prevent breeding grounds for mosquitoes, especially with the onset of the rainy season.

Among the areas closely monitored by PHO for the high number of dengue cases are San Carlos City, Bugallon, Sta. Barbara, Mangaldan and Binmaley.

She also warned Pangasinenses about other common ailments during the rainy season such as leptospirosis and gastroenteritis, among others.

As of May 18, there were six recorded cases of leptospirosis in the province, one of whom has died.

"If we are to compare the cases, there is a 45-percent decrease of leptospirosis in Pangasinan wherein there were 11 cases that were recorded last year and two have died," de Guzman said. (PNA)
