MANILA – The country’s number of deaths due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) continues to lessen, plummeting to an average of 1.6 per day by the end of May, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Tuesday.

“Magmula po sa average na 25.3 deaths simula nung Abril, bumaba na po tayo sa 1.6 deaths kada araw sa katapusan ng Mayo (From the average of 25.3 deaths in April, this has dropped to 1.6 deaths per day by the end of May),” DOH Spokesperson Maria Rosario Vergeire said in a virtual presser.

She attributed the improvement to better treatment and management of patients infected with Covid-19.

“Mas mahusay na po ang ating pagma-manage ng ating mga pasyente kaya mas nakaka-recover na po sila (We’re getting better at managing patients, resulting in more recoveries),” Vergeire said.

As of 4 p.m. on Tuesday, the DOH recorded six new deaths, bringing to 966 the total number of Covid-19 fatalities.

It also reported additional 84 recoveries, increasing the total to 4,063.

On the other hand, the total number of confirmed cases has increased to 18,997 after recording 359 new cases.

Of the new cases, the DOH said 176 were fresh cases or those whose test results were released to the patient within the last three days while 183 were late cases or those whose test results were released four days or more ago.

Central Visayas has the highest number of fresh cases with 87 followed by the National Capital Region (NCR) with 33, and 54 from other places.

Of the 183 late cases, 39 came from Metro Manila, eight from Central Visayas while 111, including 25 repatriates, were reported in other places. (PNA)
