MANILA – The Philippine Army (PA) on Friday welcomed the filing of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) of murder charges against the police officer who shot and killed retired Cpl. Winston Ragos in Quezon City last April.

“The NBI’s filing of murder cases against Police Master Sgt. Daniel Florendo and four other police trainees, in connection with the killing of former Corporal Winston Ragos, is a major step towards justice for our fallen hero, who has given the best years of his life in service to the country," Army commander, Lt. Gen. Gilbert Gapay said in a statement.

He added that the Army believes that the truth will prevail as it "expects indictment on all the cases filed."

Ragos, a PA veteran, was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), when gunned down by Master Sgt. Daniel Florendo at a checkpoint in Maligaya Drive, Pasong Putik, Quezon City after an altercation on the enforcement of quarantine rules last April 21.

"May this initial development bring comfort to his family, and continue to raise awareness on mental health, and the plight of our soldiers who bear invisible scars,” Gapay said.

Aside from murder, Florendo and four police trainees present during the incident were charged with perjury and planting of evidence. (PNA)
