LEGAZPI CITY – The Department of Health (DOH) in Bicol reported on Friday a significant decrease in dengue cases since the start of the year.

Based on the Dengue Surveillance report from January 1 to June 20, a total of 1,183 dengue cases and 10 deaths have been reported or a 45-percent drop compared to the 2,133 cases and 34 deaths recorded during the same period in 2019.

Camarines Sur has the highest number of dengue cases recorded with 584 and two deaths; Sorsogon, 226 cases and three deaths; Camarines Norte, 129 cases and two deaths; Masbate, 109 cases; Albay,105 cases and three deaths; Catanduanes, 26 cases; and four cases from other regions.

Despite the decrease in cases, the DOH–Bicol is urging the public to practice preventive measures against dengue.

“The numbers are still high with 1,183 cases and 10 deaths. The public is urged to follow (the) 4S strategy to eliminate, if not, lessen the number of dengue cases in Bicol region,” said Dr. Ernie Vera, DOH-Bicol regional director, in a statement on Friday.

The "4S" means to Search and destroy mosquito-breeding sites, practice Self-protection measures, Seek early consultation, and Say Yes to fogging when there is an impending outbreak or a hotspot.

The DOH advises the public to cover all water drums and pails, replace water in flower vases once a week, clean gutters of leaves and debris, and collect and dispose all unusable tin cans, jars, bottles, and other items that can hold water.

For self-protection measures, the agency advises wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirt, or to use mosquito repellent.

If one has fever that persists for more than two days, and experiences headaches, severe joint and muscle pain, fatigue, dizziness, loss of appetite, and skin rashes, he or she must seek consultation at the nearest health unit or health facility.

DOH-Bicol said some diseases and illnesses can be prevented, including dengue, amid the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. (PNA)
