MANILA – Comparison between countries in terms of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) case doubling time and case fatality rate must be done carefully, a health official said Monday.

In a Covid-19 presser, Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said factors like healthcare system capacity and economic status are important in making such comparisons.

"Kung kinakailangang magkumpara, mas mainam po na tingnan nalang po natin ang mga bansa sa kabuuan po ng (If a comparison is needed, it is best to compare all the countries in the) Asean," Vergeire said.

As of June 28, based on the data from the World Health Organization, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country at 36,438 is less compared to Indonesia with 52,812 and Singapore with 43,246 cases.

"Bagaman mas mataas ang ating case fatality rate na 3.55 percent kumpara kabuuang 2.9 percent para sa lahat ng bansa sa Asean, patuloy po ang pagbaba nito at mas mababa po ang ating case fatality rate kumpara sa buong mundo na (While our country's case fatality rate of 3.55 percent is high compared to the 2.9 percent for all the Asean countries, it continues to go down and our fatality rate is lower compared to the whole world at) 5.15 percent," Vergeire said.

She added the continued efforts of the DOH on the improvement of the healthcare system capacity, testing capacity, and contact tracing would help the country have better status in the succeeding months. (PNA)
