BAGUIO CITY – International Master (IM) Jan Emmanuel Garcia scored 97 points on a 66-percent winning rate to run away with the 2nd IM Haridas Pascua birthday online chess tournament held Friday.

The tournament was played over the online chess game Lichess.

Garcia played 44 games and was 10 up on 16-year-old IM Daniel Quizon, who played 43 games and winning 58 percent of them to come out second.

He got 87 points as they joined the Baguio chess master celebrates his 27th birthday through the game they all love.

The 25-year-old Garcia had a berserk rate of 43 percent against Quizon’s 43 percent.

Berserk in Lichess is a button pressed at the beginning of a game where a player losses half his or her time but a win gains an extra tournament point.

WGM (Woman Grandmaster) Kylen Mordido and Jerlyn San Diego in the Under-20 FIDE (International Chess Federation) Master David Elorta played 35 games, won 71 percent of them to finish with 81 points for third place or just a point off unrated Asuela Ellan who finished fourth.

IM Paolo Bersamina landed fifth with 78 points.

Mark Jay Bacojo was named the top non-master while Woman FM (FIDE Master) Allaney Jia Doroy was the top lady player.

The two-time national champion Pascua celebrated his birthday a week after failing to join the Philippine chess team to the FIDE Online Olympiad won by Grandmaster Banjo Barcenilla.

The online olympiad had GMs Mark Paragua, Darwin Laylo, and Joey Antonio in the men’s who escaped Bersamina for the last seat.

The women’s squad will be led by woman GM Janelle Mae Frayna with Jan Jodilyn Fronda, Catherine Scopito, and Bernadette Galas.

Quizon will lead the boys Under-20, while WGM candidate Mordido and San Diego will be his counterparts on the women’s side. (PNA)
