CEBU CITY – The first children's book that narrates the heroism of Cebu’s historical figure Leon Kilat is set to be released on his 147th birthday on July 27.

Written and illustrated by Cebuano children, the storybook is entitled "Si Leon Kilat ug ang Sigbin” and is set to be launched at Palm Grass, The Cebu Heritage Hotel here.

The Philippines celebrates National Children’s Book Day on Tuesday.

The upcoming book launch dubbed as "Leon Kilat: Revolution and Magic" is organized by Palm Grass, Tres de Abril Inc., Diyandi, and Sangguniang Kabataan Federations of Cebu Province, Mandaue City, Argao, Boljoon and Sta. Fe.

Some Cebuano children who underwent workshop in 2018 on Historya (Children Creating Stories from Cebu History) will offer the storybook as their birthday gift to the late hero.

A short video on the Historya project explaining how the children created the Leon Kilat story will be also screened on the event day. The video was created by Hong Kong-based communications specialist Pros Laput of Social Communications Asia.

Another Leon Kilat book author, Emil Justimbaste, will present a fun and informative talk on Leon Kilat's "anting-anting" (amulets) in a Facebook Live event during the launch.

The children authors of the storybook are Jhulianna Capangpangan (University of San Carlos- South Campus), Santi Sagayno (Gaas National High School), Isabella Faith Bautista (Ateneo de Cebu) and Francis Luke Vicoy (Colegio del Sto. Niño).

The book illustrator is Kristine Anne Subaan of Ateneo de Cebu.

Book publishers Tres de Abril, Inc. and Palm Grass Hotel hope that the book will reconnect the youth to their Cebu roots.

Pantaleon Villegas in real life, Leon Kilat, who was born in Bacong, Negros Oriental, was a revolutionary leader in Cebu against the Spaniards.

He led Cebu’s Katipunan revolt that was marked by his men’s victory at a spot in the city now called Tres de Abril. (PNA)
