Aftershocks possible from magnitude 5.7 Surigao Sur quake

MANILA – Aftershocks are expected from the magnitude 5.7 quake that shook Surigao del Sur on Friday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The tectonic quake struck 44 km. northeast of Hinatuan at 2:06 p.m. and had a depth of 14 km.

Intensity V was felt in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, and Intensity IV in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur; and Nabunturan and Mawab, Davao de Oro.

Intensity III was recorded in Tandag City, Maco and Maragusan in Davao de Oro; Manay and Mati, Davao Oriental; Davao City; Gingoog City and Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental, and Intensity II in Laak, Davao de Oro; Balingasag, Jasaan, Villanueva, and Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental; Cagayan de Oro City; Quezon, Maramag, Valencia City, Malaybalay City, Cabanglasan, and Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon; and Rosario, Agusan del Sur.

Intensity I was logged in Mambajao, Catarman, and Sagay, Camiguin; and Kalilangan and Pangantucan, Bukidnon.

The following instrumental intensities were also recorded: Intensity III in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur; Intensity II in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental; and Intensity I in Surigao City, Cagayan de Oro City, Kidapawan City; Tupi, South Cotabato; and Malungon and Alabel, Sarangani.

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports by people who felt the earthquake, while instrumental intensities are recorded by an intensity meter that measures the ground acceleration. Acceleration record is converted into intensities, according to Phivolcs director Renato Solidum Jr.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs is expecting damage from the quake. (PNA)
