ZAMBOANGA CITY--A group of Subanen farmers in Zamboanga del Sur is set to receive a PHP600,000 ramp-pump irrigation project from the Department of Agriculture (DA) to boost farm production.

DA-Region 9 Director Rad Donn Cedeño said Friday the Mati Subanen Farmers Association based in Barangay Mati, Tigbao, Zamboanga del Sur, is engaged in vegetable farming and other crops.

Cedeño said Thursday's outreach and consultation with some 40 Subanen "farmer-partners" aim to "exchange views and opinions with the community to be able to address certain issues in the agriculture sector of the barangay".

The activity was followed by distribution of close to PHP20,000 worth of assorted vegetable seeds such as sweet pepper, eggplant, tomato, okra, ampalaya (bitter gourd), and squash.

He assured the farmers of DA's support in providing water supply for drinking or farm use, as well as deworming of farm animals, crop insurance, and free education for children who take up agriculture courses. (PNA)
