MANILA – The head of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila on Wednesday said the diocese is not involved in the operations of the Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC) in San Juan City.

In a statement, Manila Apostolic Administrator Broderick Pabillo said the archdiocese is only the registered owner of the property where the hospital is located.

This came as lawmakers, in a House hearing on Tuesday, threatened to file plunder charges against a former official of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (Philhealth), the RCAM and the CSMC over "missing funds" worth PHP170 million.

“RCAM decided to engage the services of a third party which is Hospital Managers, Inc. (HMI) to professionally manage and operate CSMC, on August 1, 1988, for a period of 10 years, renewable for another 10 years, until 31 July 2008,” he said.

Pabillo said the diocese was "not involved" in any transactions with the state health insurance firm.

During the hearing, lawmakers cited a settlement case between PhilHealth and HMI in 2011, where HMI only refunded PHP70 million to PhilHealth, instead of a total of PHP240 million worth of "under deducted" claims from patients of the hospital. (PNA)
