MANILA – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday said seven more Filipinos abroad contracted the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), bringing to 10,035 the total confirmed cases to date.

It also registered about 47 new recoveries in the Asia Pacific and Europe, raising the total to 6,076.
No new fatality, on the other hand, was reported by the agency.

The death toll stands at 742 since August 24.

To date, the Middle East remains to be the region with the most number of confirmed Covid-19 cases, recoveries, under treatment, and fatalities among Filipinos.

Asia and the Pacific, meanwhile, has recorded the least numbers in all categories compared to other geographic regions, except in the total number of recoveries where the Americas rank lowest with only 454 recoveries.

The total number of countries and regions with confirmed cases among Filipinos remain at 73.

The DFA also continues to repatriate distressed Filipinos overseas and has so far enabled the return of some 147,482 OFWs.

In a Wednesday interview with ANC, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said at least 42 flights were funded by DFA's assistance-to-nationals fund beginning with the first one from Wuhan, China in February 2020.

The DFA has also endorsed more than 200 commercial repatriation flights, bringing home 31,000 overseas Filipinos in August alone, including those from Beirut, Lebanon.

"Over the weekend, we brought in repatriates from Tashkent, Uzbekistan and that was the first repat(riation) flight from Central Asia. We expect to bring home 177,000 more OFWs," Locsin said. (PNA)
