MANILA – The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said it would conduct online activities in support of the 3rd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) scheduled on September 10.

NDRRMC executive director and Office of Civil Defense (OCD) administrator, Ricardo Jalad, on Thursday urged the public to participate in these online activities on earthquake preparedness.

"Despite our current situation, we must bear in mind the importance of keeping ourselves safe. I encourage the public to continuously engage in activities that promote earthquake safety. In our constant effort to promote disaster resilience, everyone's involvement is necessary," Jalad said in a statement.

Unlike the usual NSED, the OCD will hold a Facebook Live streaming of the ceremonial pressing of the button to signal the "duck, cover, and hold" at 2 p.m. on September 10.

The public is encouraged to watch the live stream and do the drills inside the safety of their homes.

Aside from this, an online quiz bee will be launched at 10 a.m. on September 7, the mechanics of which will be announced later at the Civil Defense PH Facebook Page.

Meanwhile, a webinar on earthquake preparedness and response during the "new normal" is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on September 8.

Resource speakers are from the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

The OCD is also set to update the national and regional public service continuity plans, as well as its contingency plans to integrate coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) health measures. (PNA)
