COTABATO CITY – The Army’s 6th Infantry Division (6ID) lauded a civilian for quickly alerting authorities about his discovery of unexploded ordnance in Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat on Thursday.

Maj. Gen. Juvymax Uy, 6ID commander and chief of Joint Task Force Central (JTFC), said the timely reporting of civilians to authorities meant a lot.

“The unexploded ordnance might be used for bombing attempts and terroristic acts if not recovered and properly disposed of,” Uy said, lauding the civilian tipster.

Renanty Abunda, a farmer-resident of Sitio San Roque, Barangay Sto Nino, Bagumbayan, said he was walking on his way to his farm on Thursday when he noticed something protruding on a road.

Looking at it closely, he sensed it was an explosive device and immediately the matter to military authorities nearby.

A team from the 7th Infantry Battalion together with the 3rd Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team quickly proceeded to the area to verify the farmer’s discovery.

Upon technical evaluation by the EOD team, it was determined that the recovered unexploded ordnance was 105mm howitzer ammunition.

The projectile was immediately secured by the bomb disposal team.

Uy has appealed to the people to immediately report to proper authorities if they discover or stumble upon unexploded ordnance and other suspected items to avoid accidents. (PNA)
