DUMAGUETE CITY – A massive power outage hit Negros and Panay Islands Thursday morning as the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reported it experienced problems with its transmission grid.

A media advisory from the NGCP said that at around 10:13 a.m., the NGCP monitored a “grid disturbance affecting distribution utilities and electric cooperatives in Panay and Negros”.

The cause has yet to be determined, NGCP said.

Michelle Visera of the NGCP’s Corporate Communications based in Bacolod City, in a text message, said that at least 13 electric cooperatives/distribution utilities were affected by the power outage.

These are the Central Negros Electric Cooperative (CENECO) Northern Negros Electric Cooperative, (NONECO), Negros Occidental Electric Cooperative (NOCECO), Negros Oriental Electric Cooperative I (NORECO I), Negros Oriental Electric Cooperative II (NORECO II), MORE Power, Iloilo Electric Cooperative, Inc. I (ILECO I), Iloilo Electric Cooperative, Inc. II (ILECO II), Iloilo Electric Cooperative, Inc. III (ILECO III), Guimaras Electric Cooperative (GUIMELCO), Antique Electric Cooperative, Inc. (ANTECO), Capiz Electric Cooperative (CAPELCO), and Aklan Electric Cooperative, Inc. (AKELCO).

NORECO II’s information officer Sharon Araula immediately notified its member-consumer-owners that the power interruption affected its entire coverage, namely, Pamplona, Tanjay City, Amlan, San Jose, Sibulan, Dumaguete City, Valencia, Bacong, Dauin, Zamboanguita, Siaton, Sta. Catalina, Bayawan City, and Basay.

NORECO I, meanwhile, in its social media page, also put out an advisory that the power interruption also affected its area of coverage including Mabinay, Bais City, Manjuyod, Bindoy, Ayungon, Tayasan, Jimalalud, La Libertad, Guihulngan City, Vallehermoso and Canlaon City.

Some parts of Negros Oriental, specifically in the NORECO II area, had power restored by noon onwards.

“Upon advice from NCGP, restoration of power will be done by area until such time when power will stabilize,” Araula said. (PNA)
