TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the construction of flood mitigation projects worth PHP106 million in Hinunangan, Southern Leyte.
Chief of DPWH - Southern Leyte, Ma. Margarita Junia, in a phone interview on Friday, said the concrete structures located in the villages of Das-ay and Catublian were completed this month.
"The projects are situated along riverbanks in a critical and populated section," Junia said.
The agency allocated PHP39.2 million for the 340-meter riverbank protection project in Das-ay and PHP67.55 for the 670-meter concrete structure in Catublian.
"The construction of control is always included in our priority projects. We believe it is the permanent solution to safeguard the lives and properties of residents living near rivers and other flood-prone areas," she said.
The concrete barriers not only prevent flooding but also the scouring and erosion along riverbanks, Junia said.
Hinunangan is a third-class town in Southern Leyte, approximately 134 km. away from Tacloban City, the regional center of Eastern Visayas. (PNA)
