CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY--Blood donors are still needed amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic, especially for patients with other complications who badly need it.

This was according to Dr. Bernard Julius Rocha, liaison officer of the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC), who noted on Wednesday the decline of blood supply in the region in recent months.

Although he did not provide specific figures, Rocha said admissions related to Covid-19 are a primary factor in the decline of blood supply in Northern Mindanao.

This was the reason, he said, that the Philippine Red Cross has been holding blood donation drives and constantly calling on the public to donate blood.

At NMMC alone, Rocha said the current blood supply is no longer sufficient for emergency cases.

"We urge the public to visit our hospital facility (and donate blood). By November, we will come out with an announcement for the bloodletting schedule," he said.

Rocha assured that blood donors are safe from possible infection because the hospital's bloodletting facility is located in a separate facility far from where Covid-19 patients are being housed. (PNA)
