BUTUAN CITY – A member of Citizen Armed Force Geographical Forces (CAFGU) Active Auxiliary (CAA) was gunned down by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) hitmen Thursday evening (Nov. 5) in front of his residence in the Surigao del Sur town of San Agustin.

In a report Friday, the Surigao del Sur Police Provincial Office (SDSPPO) said Maximo Alcansado Dollano, 52, was talking with his neighbors at around 6:18 p.m. Thursday when unidentified assailants arrived and immediately shot him several times.

Dollano died on the spot, while the suspects immediately fled.

Police investigators found four cartridge cases and three fired slugs from caliber .45 pistol during the investigation at the crime scene, the SDSPPO report said.

“The police personnel in San Agustin are still conducting further investigation in the area. Barangay Janipaan is among the remote areas in the town,” SDSPPO director, Col. James T. Goforth told, Philippine News Agency Friday (Nov. 6).

Goforth said initial investigation pointed to the NPA rebels as the culprits.

The Army's 3rd Special Forces Battalion (3SFBn), said Dollano worked under their unit and was assigned at a patrol base in Barangay Janipaan.

“CAA Dollano was off-duty, unarmed, and was mingling with his neighbors when attacked and killed,” said 1Lt. Krisjuper Andreo J. Punsalan, 3SFBn civil-military operations officer, said in an interview Friday.

Punsalan said they believe the NPA rebels were responsible for the killing of the militiaman.

“We are still waiting for the final investigation being conducted by the Philippine National Police (PNP),” Punsalan said.

The NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. (PNA)
