BUTUAN CITY – The waters off Bislig Bay in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, has been found positive for paralytic shellfish poison beyond the regulatory limit and considered harmful for human consumption, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in the Caraga Region (BFAR-13) reported Wednesday.
In a bulletin, BFAR-13 said the red tide continues to affect Lianga Bay areas and the coastal waters of Hinatuan town in Surigao del Sur.
A red tide was declared in these waters earlier this year.
“All types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered from these areas are not safe for human consumption, BFAR-13 said.
It added that fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.
In September this year, BFAR-13 reported that seven persons were affected by red tide poisoning in Hinatuan town, one of whom died after consuming a type of shellfish locally known as “pados” and “balihasa”.
The agency said it has already coordinated with the local government units in the area to warn residents. (PNA)
