CABANATUAN CITY, Nueva Ecija – Some PHP131.87 million worth of rice crops were damaged by Typhoon Ulysses in Nueva Ecija, according to the report of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) on Friday.

Aside from rice, the PDRRMC also recorded damage to onions estimated at PHP557,420, and fruits and vegetables at PHP86,809.

Dr. Abraham Pascua, PDRRMC consultant, and spokesperson said the figures were based on initial data from the Office of the Provincial Agriculture (OPA) as they continue to validate reports coming in to their office.

The hardest hit in onion crops was Bongabon town, the onion basket of the Philippines, having incurred an estimated loss of PHP250,720; followed by San Jose City at PHP126,600; Sto. Domingo at PHP31,500; Laur at PHP84,600; Rizal at PHP24,000; and Llanera at PHP40,000.

"Ang Bongabon ay maraming nasirang sibuyas kasi sila yung talagang nagtatanim ng palusot (Bongabon has a lot of damaged onions because they are the ones who plant during off-season)," Pascua said.

The initial report also showed that at least 870 families, comprising 3,818 individuals were affected by the typhoon in Nueva Ecija.

They were evacuated to various centers in the province, Pascua said. (PNA
