MANILA – Over PHP1 million was allocated for the establishment of a research station called "Intelligent Green Box" (IGB) within the premises of the Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), according to Department of Science and Technology-Region VIII Director Ernesto Granada on Friday.

Granada said the research station aims to optimize indoor farming technology in the region.

"Initially, the EVSU engineers will be involved in the R&D (research and development) and capability building activities. Once the model is available and results of profitability analysis is available, (IGB) units will fabricated by (the local government) of Leyte to be deployed to the municipalities in the province. DOST-8 would also deploy units to the farmers' group," Granada told the Philippine News Agency.

IGB installation started last Nov 25, and is expected to be completed before year end, he said.

In the future, units will be deployed across the region, while EVSU engineers would train engineers of other state universities in the region, Granada added.

"This project is expected to help Region 8 achieve food security by introducing technologies on growing high value crops in climate-controlled environment," he said, adding that the project would also use hydroponics, electrical and solar power energy systems.

"Region 8 is frequently visited by typhoons. Through the IGB, high-value crops can still be grown inside it," he said.

Meanwhile, Granada said that the IGB would also boost the research capabilities of the EVSU engineers. DOST-8, for its part, would also provide PHP1 million to install an IGB unit at La Granja de Reyna farm in Tacloban City next year, he added. (PNA)
