Magnitude 5.4 quake rocks Sorsogon

MANILA – A magnitude 5.4 quake jolted Sorsogon Monday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tectonic quake, which struck 37 kilometers northeast of Prieto Diaz at 10:37 p.m., had a depth of 77 km.

Intensity 5 was felt in Sorsogon City, while Intensity 4 was felt in Legazpi City; Virac, Catanduanes; Naga City; Catarman, Northern Samar.

Intensity 3 was reported in Bulusan, and Irosin, Sorsogon; Catbalogan City, and Intensity 2 in Palo, Alangalang, Babatngon, Calubian and Dagami, Leyte.

The following instrumental intensities were recorded:
--Intensity 4 - Legazpi City
--Intensity 3 - Sipocot, Camarines Sur; Borongan City, Eastern Samar; Palo, Leyte; Irosin, Sorsogon
--Intensity 2 - Naval, Biliran; Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte
--Intensity 1- Lopez, Quezon; Casiguran, Aurora

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports by people who felt the earthquake while instrumental intensity is measured using intensity meter that measures ground acceleration

Phivolcs said aftershocks are possible, but damages are not expected.

Earlier, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum Jr. said damage starts at intensity 6 based on Phivolcs' scale.

Engr. Raden Dimaano, head of Sorsogon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (SPDRRMO), said there are no initial report of damages, but they are monitoring the situation in the municipality of Prieto Diaz.

"We are coordinating with all the barangays especially the coastal areas," Dimaano said. (With reports from Connie Calipay/PNA)
